IS THIS YOU?

Most people reading this page are thinking one of these things:

My skin has flared up again and the creams from the GP aren't touching it.
I've had eczema for years and I'm tired of just managing it.
My teenager's acne is knocking their confidence and nothing seems to work.
My face is always red, and people assume it's something it isn't.
I keep getting rashes and nobody can tell me why.
I want a specialist to actually get to the bottom of it.
Skin conditions are more than skin-deep. Whether your concern is new, long-standing, or hasn't responded to previous treatment, a consultant dermatologist can give you a proper diagnosis and a plan that goes beyond the next prescription.
SPECIALIST SKIN MEDICINE

What does a consultant dermatologist do?

A consultant dermatologist is a doctor who has completed specialist training in diseases of the skin, hair and nails. Where a GP appointment offers minutes and a standard prescription, a dermatology consultation offers a full diagnostic assessment: your history, your triggers, examination with tools such as dermoscopy, and access to treatments that are not available over the counter or in primary care.

At Apex, private dermatology is consultant-led from the first appointment, and you keep the same consultant throughout your care. That continuity matters for chronic conditions, where the real progress happens over months of adjusting a plan that someone actually remembers.
WHAT WE TREAT

Conditions we diagnose and treat

All types, from blackheads and whiteheads to inflammatory nodules and cysts, on the face, chest, back and scalp. Assessment covers severity, skin type and hormonal factors before a personalised plan: benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, topical retinoids or oral antibiotics, with hormonal treatments, isotretinoin or light-based therapies for persistent cases. Where acne overlaps with rosacea, the approach is adjusted to calm sensitivity and restore balance.

A chronic condition causing dryness, itching and inflammation, often triggered by environmental factors, allergens or stress. Treatment includes medical-grade emollients and anti-inflammatory creams, with patch testing to identify triggers where indicated. For severe or resistant eczema, systemic treatments or phototherapy may be considered, and the plan takes account of the impact on your daily life and wellbeing.

Thick, scaly plaques, most often on the scalp, elbows, knees and lower back, sometimes involving the nails or joints. No two cases are the same: management ranges from topical medications to phototherapy and systemic therapy for widespread disease, with care coordinated across disciplines for psoriatic arthritis or overlapping conditions.

Facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels and inflammatory bumps, often mistaken for acne and commonly triggered by sun, alcohol, spicy food or temperature changes. Treatment aims to calm inflammation, reduce redness and strengthen the skin barrier, through topical creams, oral medication and skincare adjustments. Most patients find flare-ups become less frequent with the right plan.

For symptoms that come and go without an obvious cause, we use advanced diagnostics, including dermoscopy, patch testing and blood tests, to move from symptom control to an actual answer.

Alopecia, thinning, scalp inflammation and nail changes can signal dermatological, hormonal or nutritional issues. Initial assessment is available within dermatology; see our dedicated hair and nail disorders service for the full pathway.

WHEN TO SEEK HELP

GP, pharmacy, or private dermatologist?

Plenty of skin complaints resolve with over-the-counter care or a GP prescription, and when they do, that's the right first step. A consultant dermatologist earns their place when the problem persists despite treatment, keeps returning, remains undiagnosed, or is affecting your confidence and daily life. The same is true if you've been managing a chronic condition for years on repeat prescriptions without a specialist ever reviewing the plan, or if you want access to treatments primary care can't prescribe, such as isotretinoin, biologics or phototherapy.

Early specialist input often means fewer wasted months of trial and error. And if your concern turns out to be simple, you'll hear that honestly too.
If you've decided it's time to see a private dermatologist, you can book directly: no referral, no waiting list, and usually an appointment within the week.

YOUR CARE, STEP BY STEP

From first appointment to lasting control

Most patients leave their first appointment with a diagnosis and a plan. Chronic conditions then come under control through iteration over the following months, with the same consultant adjusting the same plan until it works.

1

Consultation

A full medical and dermatological history: your symptoms, triggers, treatment history, and how the condition affects your life.

2

Examination and diagnostics

Affected areas examined, with dermoscopy where relevant, and further investigations arranged if needed: patch testing, blood tests or biopsy.

3

Diagnosis and plan

A clear explanation of what your condition is and why it behaves the way it does, then a personalised treatment plan covering medication, skincare and the lifestyle factors that influence it.

4

Treatment and adjustment

Treatment begins, and is reviewed and refined at follow-up. Chronic conditions respond to iteration; your consultant stays with the plan until it works.

5

Long-term control

Once your skin is stable, you'll know exactly how to keep it that way, what to do at the first sign of a flare, and when it's worth coming back.

ONGOING CARE

Care that continues between appointments

Chronic skin conditions don't follow appointment schedules, so your plan includes what to do when things change: how to manage a flare, when to adjust treatment, and how to reach the team between visits. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to match your condition rather than a standard interval, and long-standing patients return to the consultant who knows their history.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about dermatology at Apex Medical

No. You can book directly with our clinic to see a consultant dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment. Same-week appointments are often available.

We treat all acne types, including hormonal and cystic acne. Options range from topical treatments and oral antibiotics to hormonal therapies, isotretinoin and light-based treatments, tailored to your skin and severity. Cases involving acne rosacea are managed with combination therapy.

It depends on the type and severity. We assess each case individually and may use topical anti-inflammatory treatments, phototherapy, systemic treatments or biologics, alongside trigger identification through allergy and patch testing where relevant.

That's exactly when specialist review earns its keep. We provide comprehensive reassessment, diagnostic clarity, and access to advanced treatments that primary care can't prescribe, including biologics, isotretinoin and phototherapy where suitable.

Yes, we treat patients of all ages. Early intervention matters, particularly for acne and eczema, where it can prevent scarring and long-term inflammation.

Yes. Stress, diet and sleep all influence inflammatory skin conditions, and we discuss these factors as part of your plan rather than treating the skin in isolation.

Some patients notice change within weeks; chronic conditions can take several months to stabilise. Regular follow-up keeps the plan working as your skin responds.

Yes. We offer patch testing for contact allergies, plus prick testing and blood tests where indicated. Identifying a trigger can change everything for recurrent rashes and dermatitis.
