Otoplasty: Ear Pinning and Correction

Prominent ears are one of the oldest reasons people seek plastic surgery, and one of the most reliably fixable. Consultant-led otoplasty for adults, and honest, unhurried guidance for parents thinking about a child.

Is this you

Most people who come to us for ear pinning and correction say one of these things:

I've worn my hair over my ears my entire life.
Hats, ponytails, swimming: I've avoided them all for decades.
Every group photo, I check my ears first.
I'm not vain. This one thing has just always bothered me.
My child has started mentioning their ears, and I don't know what's right.
I wish my parents had sorted mine. I want to think properly about my child's.
Adults who have otoplasty overwhelmingly say the same thing afterwards: "I should have done this years ago." And parents wrestling with the question for a child deserve straight, unpressured guidance, which is exactly what the consultation is.
THE OPERATION, EXPLAINED

What is otoplasty and how does it work?

Otoplasty reshapes and repositions prominent or asymmetric ears, usually by recreating the missing fold of cartilage and setting the ear closer to the head, through an incision hidden behind the ear. Prominence is almost always a simple anatomical variation: a fold that didn't fully form, or a deep conchal bowl, both correctable.

The operation changes remarkably little tissue for the change it makes; ears sit naturally against the head, scars hide in the crease behind them, and nobody who didn't know would guess. Hearing is entirely unaffected.
FOR ADULTS

It's not too late, and it's simpler than you think

Adult otoplasty is usually done under local anaesthetic: one to two hours, awake and comfortable, home shortly after. If you've spent decades arranging hair, hats and camera angles around your ears, you're the typical patient here, not the exception. Recovery is undramatic: a head bandage for the first days, then a sports-style headband at night for some weeks to protect the correction while the cartilage sets, desk work at about a week, contact sports later on your surgeon's schedule.

And the emotional truth, without melodrama: otoplasty carries some of the highest satisfaction rates in cosmetic surgery, precisely because the bother is so old and so specific. It's the operation where "I should have done this years ago" is practically the standard review.
FOR PARENTS

Considering ear correction for your child

Ears are close to fully grown from around age five, so surgery is technically possible from then. But timing is a family decision, not a sales point, and the guidance most surgeons share is consistent: the strongest results come when the child is bothered, old enough to understand what's happening, and involved in the decision, because surgery a child hasn't asked for is rarely the right call. Teasing that troubles the parent more than the child deserves reflection before it deserves an operation.

Children's surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic in an appropriate paediatric setting. The consultation is unhurried, includes your child appropriately, and quite often ends with "wait", which is advice we give comfortably. One honest note on the NHS: funding for ear correction is now rare and varies by area, which is why many parents find themselves researching privately. We'll be straight with you about whether and when surgery genuinely serves your child.

Consultant-led care

Your surgeon, for

adults and for families

Otoplasty looks simple and is anything but casual: the missing fold has to be recreated, not just bent, and the two ears balanced as a pair, because almost no ears start symmetrical.

At Apex, otoplasty is planned and performed by Mr Kuen Yeow Chin, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and founder of Apex, with ear correction surgery among his practice's procedures. The surgeon you meet at consultation is the surgeon who operates.

YOUR CARE, STEP BY STEP

How Otoplasty
Works at Apex

Five steps for adults, and the same five taken slower for families: consultation, time to think, day-case surgery, and review until the result has set.

1

Consultation

Assessment of the fold, the bowl and the asymmetry (most ears differ; correction plans for it); honest advice, risks named plainly (bleeding, infection, scar sensitivity, recurrence of prominence, asymmetry); for children, a conversation that includes them.

2

Two weeks to think

Cooling-off as standard, for adults and, doubly so, for families.

3

Pre-operative assessment

Standard health screening; anaesthetic planning by age and preference.

4

Surgery day

Adults: usually local anaesthetic, one to two hours, home the same day. Children: general anaesthetic, day case, in an appropriate setting.

5

Recovery and review

Head bandage for the first days, then a protective headband at night for several weeks; back to work or school in about a week; swimming and contact sports on your surgeon's schedule; review until healed and both of you are satisfied.

ONGOING CARE

Protecting the result while it sets

The bandage, and then the night-time headband, are the whole discipline of otoplasty recovery: they protect the new fold while the cartilage sets, so wear them exactly as prescribed rather than as remembered. Sleep on your back where you can in the early weeks. Soreness fades over days with simple painkillers; numbness of the ears is normal and settles over weeks.

Work or school resumes at about a week, swimming and contact sports on your surgeon's schedule rather than the calendar's, and the fine scar in the crease behind the ear is kept clean and protected while it matures, where even short hair hides it. Reviews continue until the correction has settled and you're happy.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about otoplasty at Apex Medical

No. Cartilage is correctable at any adult age, and a large share of otoplasty patients are adults finally fixing a lifelong bother. Satisfaction rates in this group are exceptionally high.

The incision sits in the crease behind the ear, where even short hair hides it. Once matured, it's hard to find on purpose.

Expect soreness and tightness for a few days, well controlled with simple painkillers. The headband is more of an annoyance than the pain, and it matters, so wear it.

Slight loss of correction is possible as cartilage settles, and technique is designed to guard against it. Significant recurrence is uncommon and correctable; your surgeon will quote honest numbers.

Technically from around five, when ears are near full size. Practically: when the child is bothered, understands, and wants it, which is often later. A consultation gives you an honest read on your child's anatomy and your family's timing, and "wait" is a common and comfortable answer.

No. The operation reshapes the outer ear only and has no effect on hearing.

Very. Most prominent ears are asymmetric, and the operation plans each ear individually to finish balanced.
