Mole Removal, Done by the Right Hands

Whether a mole catches on clothing, sits where you'd rather it didn't, or has simply bothered you for years, consultant-led removal is quick, comfortable and designed to heal as invisibly as possible. And if a mole has changed, we check before we remove, every time.

Is this you

Most people who come to us for mole removal say one of these things:

It catches on my collar, my razor, my hairbrush. Every single day.
I've hated it in photos since I was a teenager.
It's not medical. I just want it gone, without a lecture.
The GP said it's harmless but the NHS won't remove it.
I want it off my face, which means I really care who does it.
Honestly? It's changed a bit, and I'd rather it was off and tested.
Five of those six are cosmetic reasons, and all five are valid; you don't need a medical excuse to want a mole gone. The sixth is different, and it's the one we take a closer look at first.
CHECK BEFORE YOU REMOVE

Not every mole should go straight to removal

Most moles removed privately are entirely benign, removed because they catch, rub or bother their owner, and that removal is straightforward. But a mole that has changed in size, shape, colour or texture, started itching or bleeding, or simply looks different from its neighbours deserves assessment before anyone removes it. Removing a suspicious mole without proper evaluation risks the wrong procedure, the wrong margins and a missed diagnosis.

At Apex every removal starts with a consultant examining the mole, dermoscopically where indicated. If it's benign, we proceed, often at the same visit. If anything needs a closer look, you're already in the right clinic: skin cancer screening and diagnosis runs on the same site with the same consultants, and if you have many moles worth watching rather than removing, mole mapping tracks them properly.
THE PROCEDURE, EXPLAINED

How your mole is removed

Most mole removals at Apex are surgical excisions under local anaesthetic: the mole is removed with a small margin of surrounding skin and the wound is closed with fine sutures. It's the workhorse technique because it removes the whole mole, gives the laboratory a complete specimen, and, done well, heals to the neatest long-term result.

For raised, confirmed-benign moles, shave excision is sometimes the better choice: the mole is reduced flush with the surrounding skin, leaving a flat surface with no deep sutures. The trade-off, explained honestly at consultation, is a small chance of partial regrowth, because the deeper cells remain.

Which technique you're offered depends on the mole's type, its site and your priorities, not a one-size-fits-all menu. Either way you're awake and comfortable throughout, and most procedures take 15 to 30 minutes. The plastic-surgery difference shows at the planning stage: incisions placed along natural skin lines, and closure technique drawn from reconstructive practice, because what your skin looks like in a year is decided in those first few minutes. And every mole we remove, including purely cosmetic removals, is sent for histology, confirming it was benign and giving you an answer rather than an absence.
Any clinic can take a mole off. The two things worth paying for are the judgement to know which moles need checking first, and the closure technique that decides what your skin looks like in a year.

Expert care for the

skin you live in.

THE HONEST BIT

Every removal leaves a mark; technique decides how much

Removing skin always leaves some form of mark, and any clinic promising "scar-free" removal is overpromising. What technique controls is how small, flat and faded that mark becomes: incision placement along relaxed skin tension lines, fine suturing, and aftercare that protects the healing wound (sun protection above all). Most excision scars fade to a fine pale line over months. Facial moles get the most conservative planning of all, and scar correction expertise is in the same hands if an old scar from elsewhere needs revising.

Where it shows

A mole removal is a small procedure with a very visible outcome, which is why who does it matters more than how long it takes.

At Apex, mole removal and scar correction are led by Mr Kuen Yeow Chin, Consultant Plastic Surgeon and founder of Apex, whose reconstructive practice is the source of the closure techniques that decide how your skin heals. Our consultant dermatologists also remove benign moles within their clinics, and your consultation confirms who will carry out your procedure.

YOUR CARE, STEP BY STEP

What happens, step by step

Five steps, one clear pathway: assessment first, removal often the same day, and follow-through until the scar has settled.

1

Consultation

A consultant examines the mole, dermoscopically where indicated, discusses your reasons and agrees the technique. Suspicious features redirect to screening first, always.

2

Removal, often same visit

Local anaesthetic, 15 to 30 minutes, awake and comfortable.

3

Histology

The tissue goes to the laboratory as standard, even for cosmetic removals; results returned and explained to you.

4

Healing

Simple dressing, normal activity within days, sutures out at one to two weeks where used.

5

Scar care and review

Wound check, scar guidance (silicone, massage, strict sun protection), and review until you and your consultant are happy with the result.

Contultation

Every removal starts with a consultant assessment of the mole, dermoscopically where indicated. Your fee is confirmed when you book.

Mole Removal (surgical excision)

Includes excision under local anaesthetic, fine-suture closure and histology as standard. Your exact quote is confirmed at consultation.

from £1,200

Shave excision and removal of multiple moles are quoted individually at consultation, once your consultant has assessed each mole. Every quote is confirmed in writing before you commit to anything.
ONGOING CARE

After your removal

Healing is simple for most patients. A small dressing covers the wound for the first few days; you can shower carefully soon after, and return to normal activity almost immediately, holding off on strenuous exercise and swimming until any sutures are out at one to two weeks. The scar then does its real work over months, not weeks: it looks its most red and raised early on, before gradually flattening and fading toward a fine pale line. Sun protection is the single biggest factor in how well a scar matures, so keep a healing scar covered or under high-SPF protection for its first year; silicone gel and massage help once the wound has closed, and your consultant will show you both. Your histology result is returned and explained to you, and in the rare case it needs a follow-up conversation, you're already under the care of the right team, with screening and treatment pathways on the same site.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about mole removal at Apex Medical

No. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic first, so you'll feel pressure rather than pain. Most patients say the anticipation was worse than the procedure.

Yes, and many of our patients do. Your consultant still assesses the mole first, because that's good medicine, not gatekeeping; once it's confirmed benign, wanting it gone is reason enough.

Every removal leaves some mark; technique determines how small and how faded. Expect a fine line that matures over months, planned along your skin's natural lines, with facial moles handled most conservatively of all.

Yes, as standard, even for cosmetic removals. Laboratory analysis confirms the mole was benign, which turns "probably fine" into an answer.

Full excisions usually take fine sutures, removed at one to two weeks. Shave excisions typically heal without deep stitches. Your consultant confirms the plan before you decide anything.

After full excision, very rarely. After shave excision, a small proportion regrow partially because the deeper cells remain; that trade-off is explained before you choose the technique.

Then assessment comes first, not removal. Changed moles are examined dermoscopically and, where needed, move through our screening and diagnosis pathway; if removal follows, it's done with the appropriate margins. That order protects you.

No. You can book directly, and we're equally happy to work from a GP's recommendation if you have one.
