Is this you

Most people who come to us for mole mapping say one of these things:

One of my moles looks different and I can't stop thinking about it.
I've got a lot of moles and I can't keep track of them all, especially the ones I can't see.
Skin cancer runs in my family and I want to stay ahead of it.
I spent years in the sun and I'd like a proper baseline of my skin.
I just want peace of mind from someone who does this every day.
I'd like a full-body mole check so any new or changing moles can be spotted early.
Whichever brought you here, you don't need to work out for yourself whether a mole is worrying. That's our job. Most moles are harmless, and a thorough check is the fastest way to know where you stand.
More than a standard mole check

What is mole mapping and how does it work?

Mole mapping is a non-invasive, full-body skin check that uses high-resolution digital imaging to record the position and appearance of every mole on your body. Images are compared over time, with AI-supported analysis, so that new moles, or subtle changes to existing ones, can be identified far earlier than the eye alone can manage.

Many clinics advertise mole checks that are, in practice, a quick visual inspection. A visual check has value, but it can miss subtle changes, especially if you have many moles, or skin that has had frequent sun exposure. At Apex we use the FotoFinder Bodystudio ATBM® system: standardised full-body photography combined with digital dermoscopy and AI-supported comparison, giving you and our clinical team a reliable, reviewable record of your skin.

This allows us to:
Understanding your skin

When should you have a mole checked?

Most of the moles we're asked about turn out to be nothing, and that answer is worth having too. But some changes deserve a professional eye: a mole that looks or feels different from your others, a skin lesion that hasn't healed, or a mole that has changed after time in the sun. The same is true of moles in places you can't easily monitor, such as the scalp, the back and behind the ears, and of any mole at all if skin cancer runs in your family.
Signs of early detection

Early melanoma detection and the ABCDE signs.

Clinicians assess a mole using the simple ABCDE guide. Five changes worth knowing:

Noticing one of these signs doesn't mean you have skin cancer. Most moles that get checked are harmless. It means a professional assessment is the sensible next step, because found early, melanoma is at its most treatable.

A

Asymmetry

One half of the mole looks different to the other.

B

Border

Edges appear irregular, blurred or notched.

C

Colour

Uneven colour, or more than one shade.

D

Diameter

Larger than about 6mm, or increasing over time.

E

Evolving

Any ongoing change in size, shape, colour or sensation.
Full-body monitoring

Who is mole mapping for?

As for who benefits from full mapping rather than a one-off check: it's designed for people whose skin is hard to monitor by eye alone. Many moles, fair or frequently sun-exposed skin, a family history of skin cancer, or a previous melanoma, basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma.
For those patients, a recorded baseline turns “I think that one's new” into something your clinical team can actually verify. And if none of that applies and you simply want long-term peace of mind, a single assessment will tell you honestly how often, if at all, you need to come back.

Focused assessment

A Single Mole Check

Right when one specific mole is on your mind. A clinician examines it with dermoscopy and gives you a clear answer, usually in one appointment.

A calm, clear path from first appointment to results

01

Consultation

Your appointment begins with a discussion of your history and any concerns, followed by an examination of your skin. Nothing happens without being explained first.

02

Full body imaging with FotoFinder.

We photograph all relevant areas of your body from standardised positions, building your baseline skin map. The imaging is painless, radiation-free, and the whole appointment typically takes under an hour.

03

Digital mapping and AI-supported comparison.

The system maps your existing moles, logs their features, and flags anything that merits closer clinical attention. At follow-up appointments, it compares your skin against your baseline images.

04

Clinical review and plan.

Our skin cancer nurse specialists examine any flagged or unusual moles using dermoscopy, explain what they see in plain language, and answer your questions there and then.

05

Clear next steps.

Most patients leave with straightforward reassurance and a recommended monitoring plan. If anything needs further assessment, a follow-up consultation with Mr Chin is arranged promptly, with continuity of care throughout.
A more thorough approach

More than a standard mole check.

Mole mapping records your skin in detail, so that changes can be seen clearly over time. Using high-resolution digital imaging, we build a reliable baseline of your moles and pigmented lesions that future appointments can be compared against — rather than relying on memory or a one-off inspection.

Many clinics advertise mole checks but offer only a quick visual inspection. While helpful, this can miss subtle changes — particularly in people with many moles, or skin that has frequently been exposed to the sun. At Apex, we use the FotoFinder bodystudio ATBM system, combining high-resolution imaging with AI-supported analysis to help identify early warning signs of melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and other skin cancers.
Transparent Pricing

An initial full-body appointment builds a clear baseline of your skin and existing moles, helping determine your individual risk and the right follow-up plan. For some patients a single assessment provides reassurance. For others, particularly those with multiple moles or higher risk factors, regular monitoring supports early detection.

ONGOING CARE

Care that continues between appointments

Chronic skin conditions don't follow appointment schedules, so your plan includes what to do when things change: how to manage a flare, when to adjust treatment, and how to reach the team between visits. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to match your condition rather than a standard interval, and long-standing patients return to the consultant who knows their history.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about mole mapping at Apex Medical

Mole mapping is a non-invasive digital imaging process that records the appearance and position of your moles. Using full-body photography and dermoscopic imaging, we monitor changes over time, helping identify early signs of skin cancer before they become obvious to the eye. It's particularly recommended if you have multiple or atypical moles, or a personal or family history of melanoma.

No. A standard mole check is a one-off visual examination. Digital mole mapping includes full-body photography, dermoscopic imaging and structured comparison over time, so new or changing moles can be identified at follow-up, often earlier than a visual check alone.

Mole mapping doesn't diagnose cancer - it identifies moles that need closer attention, which may then require a biopsy or excision to confirm. Its value is in supporting early detection, when treatment is most effective.

Yes. It's painless and radiation-free, with no injections or dyes, and is suitable for all skin types and ages.

Your initial appointment typically takes under an hour, including imaging and clinical review. You'll have time to ask questions, and you'll leave knowing your next steps.

Most higher-risk individuals benefit from annual mapping. That includes people with many moles, a family history of skin cancer, or a previous melanoma. Your clinician will recommend a personalised plan based on your risk profile.

If a mole appears unusual or changes between scans, we may recommend excision or biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. All procedures are carried out by our own consultant-led team. See our skin cancer treatment page.

An initial full-body appointment is £380, follow-ups are £304, and two people attending together is £680. Prices include imaging and clinical assessment. See the pricing section above for what's included.
