Common questions about mole mapping at Apex Medical
Mole mapping is a non-invasive digital imaging process that records the appearance and position of your moles. Using full-body photography and dermoscopic imaging, we monitor changes over time, helping identify early signs of skin cancer before they become obvious to the eye. It's particularly recommended if you have multiple or atypical moles, or a personal or family history of melanoma.
No. A standard mole check is a one-off visual examination. Digital mole mapping includes full-body photography, dermoscopic imaging and structured comparison over time, so new or changing moles can be identified at follow-up, often earlier than a visual check alone.
Mole mapping doesn't diagnose cancer - it identifies moles that need closer attention, which may then require a biopsy or excision to confirm. Its value is in supporting early detection, when treatment is most effective.
Yes. It's painless and radiation-free, with no injections or dyes, and is suitable for all skin types and ages.
Your initial appointment typically takes under an hour, including imaging and clinical review. You'll have time to ask questions, and you'll leave knowing your next steps.
Most higher-risk individuals benefit from annual mapping. That includes people with many moles, a family history of skin cancer, or a previous melanoma. Your clinician will recommend a personalised plan based on your risk profile.
If a mole appears unusual or changes between scans, we may recommend excision or biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. All procedures are carried out by our own consultant-led team. See our skin cancer treatment page.
